Sometimes when things feel very difficult you may feel that harming yourself is the only way to relieve your sadness, tension, anxiety, or anger. Turning your emotions in on yourself and causing yourself physical pain can often make you believe that the emotional pain lessens. This, if it works at all, is only a temporary relief however, and is a very risky way of managing distress.
It may be that you have done it for a long time and it feels like a habit now that is hard to break, or it may be that you have only recently started to do it as a way to help yourself deal with whatever is going on in your life.
Either way, talking to someone about what is going on and what has led up to you feeling that self-harm is the only option is an important step to take.
